General Guidelines for Equine Testosterone Use

Therapeutic Use Only: Testosterone may only be administered for therapeutic purposes, such as the treatment of an existing illness or injury. The use of testosterone for non-therapeutic purposes, including performance enhancement, is strictly prohibited.

Threshold Concentrations: In regulated environments, such as racing, testosterone levels in biological samples must not exceed the following thresholds:

  • Geldings: 20 ng/ml in urine or 100 pg/ml in plasma/serum.
  • Fillies and Mares: 55 ng/ml in urine or 100 pg/ml in plasma/serum.
  • Male Horses (excluding geldings): Levels must not exceed naturally occurring physiological concentrations.

Prohibited in Competition: Testosterone and other anabolic androgenic steroids (AAS) are banned in competition unless administered under strict therapeutic guidelines. Horses treated with testosterone must adhere to withdrawal times and testing requirements before being eligible to compete again.

Specific Rules for Racing Horses

Veterinarian's List: Horses treated with testosterone for recovery from illness or injury may be placed on a veterinarian's list to monitor drug concentrations. They may only return to competition once their levels fall below the designated thresholds.

Waiting Periods: Horses cannot be entered into a race until at least 60 days have passed since the therapeutic administration of testosterone. During this waiting period, biological samples must test negative for excessive levels of testosterone.

Documentation Requirements: The administering veterinarian is required to document the treatment, including dosage, route, site of administration, and justification for use. Consideration and documentation of alternative treatments should be made prior to the use of testosterone.

Regulatory Oversight: Regulatory bodies, such as the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) and state racing commissions, enforce these guidelines to ensure compliance. Violations may result in penalties for owners, trainers, and veterinarians involved.
